New Dance in a New China:Local Dance in an International Context

2019.10.10

About the event

Our conversation will focus on the contemporary dance scene in China and the US, as well as more globally, to examine the role of dance in areas such as cross cultural and local community building and in cultural education. The event will explore contemporary dance as both an important part of ecology in communities and as a global force in the arts. Our discussion will be moderated by Sophie Zinser, Schwarzman Scholars Class of 2019-20.

About the speaker

Pamela Tatge is the Director of Jacob’s Pillow, an international dance Festival, professional School, and Archives located in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. Tatge is responsible for setting the artistic vision and strategic goals for all aspects of the organization, including Festival programming, education, preservation, audience engagement, residency programming and artist support, long-term planning, collaborative programming, fundraising, marketing, and more. In June 2017, Tatge spearheaded the creation of Vision ‘22, a strategic approach to the Pillow’s development through 2022. As a blueprint for enabling Jacob’s Pillow to become a year-round center for dance research and development, the initiative highlights three areas of focus: creating the Pillow Lab, an incubator of new work; enhancing the Pillow’s civic leadership and community engagement; and renewing campus facilities.

Yuxing WANG is the Senior Dance Program Manager at China’s National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Mr. Wang, who earned a Master’s Degree in Dance Theory from the Graduate School of Chinese Art Academy, has collaborated with over 50 companies from all over the world since 2013, including the Marrinsky Theater, the American Ballet Theater, La Scalla, the Netherland Dance Theater, Aifman Ballet, the Stuttgart Ballet, and the Hamburg Ballet among others. He is a distinguished lecturer at the Arts Academy at NCPA. Mr. Wang has been a special guest at the Shanghai International Festival, Hong Kong International Festival, Munich Ballet, and Prix de Lausanne and is frequently invited as expert and critic to seminars on new dance productions.

Yabin WANG is a renowned contemporary dancer and choreographer from China. She has won numerous gold prizes in Chinese national and regional dance competitions. In 2009 Yabin Wang started her own studio, Yabin Studio and has produced a dance performance every year ever since then under her brand name Yabin & Her Friends. Her dance company produces full-length dance programs and commissions choreographers from the US, Europe and China to create new works of dance. Her extraordinary talent has received praise from critics and artists alike, both as a dancer and as well as a choreographer. She has gained a reputation as the most promising and pioneering choreographers, dancers and producers of new contemporary dance in and outside of China. In 2014, Yabin Wang was commissioned by English National Ballet Artistic Director Tamara Rojo to choreograph a ballet for the triple bill “She Said” in celebration of female choreographers which premiered in 2016 at Sadler’s Wells, London. Yabin Wang choreographed “M-Dao” as part of the triple bill. This production, together with “Akram Khan’s New Giselle”, won the 2017 Laurence Olivier Award for the English National Ballet in Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
