Visual Arts Department,University of California,San Diego Li Huai.Artist as Producer

2018.11.27

About the speaker

Li Huai received her BA in fine arts at the Beijing Film Academy and her MFA in art at the California Institute of the Arts. She has been on the faculty of the Visual Arts Department at UCSD since 1994. Her specialties include installation, painting, drawing, multi-media, and Chinese calligraphy.  In thematic terms, her work deals with various issues related to East-West cultural interaction in an increasingly transnational age, including issues involving the Asian diaspora. Her major one-person shows have been staged in national and international museums, art centers and galleries in Los Angeles, San Diego, Singapore, New Orleans, Hong Kong, Rimini (Italy), Edinburgh (Scotland), Ravenna (Italy), and Lyon (France). Her work has been shown in numerous group exhibitions in Mexico, Canada, China, South Africa, Japan and other national and international venues.

Among other things, she's well connected in the Chinese film world.  She was classmates at the Beijing Film Academy with Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, and Tian Zhuangzhuang.

About the event

All artists are producers.  All artists are educated and create their art in specific historical settings.  This presentation deals with Li Huai’s education and artmaking in China in the late 1970s and early 1980s and then goes on to deal with her education and artmaking in the USA from the 1990s to today.  She will discuss exactly how her multimedia work became transnational and thus involves a complex East-West cultural interface.
