Chung-ying Cheng has a PhD in philosophy from Harvard and specialized in both contemporary analytical philosophy and Classical and Neo-Confucian metaphysics and ethics. He is a Professor of Philosophy at University of Hawaii at Manoa and has lectured all over the world (Germany and England) and China, including Peking University and Tsinghua University. He is a well-known philosopher and the Founder / Editor of the well-celebrated Journal of Chinese Philosophy.
Mankind is presently confronted with the problem of how to coordinate and unify modernity with postmodernity or technology with humanity. It is the problem to strike a mean between control and freedom. I propose that we should not lose sight of nature and naturalness (unmediated by AI or even reflective intelligence) which is the essence of life. For this purpose we should see both globalizability and sustainability as two mutually checking requirements for our research direction and life practice. We should envision a life of E-Trinity: Naturalism, Productivity and Harmony, that is, Ecology, Economy and Ethics.
