On May 17th, the inauguration ceremony and first plenary meeting of the Schwarzman College’s Academic Steering Committee, was held in its very own building at Tsinghua University. Yang Bin, Vice President, Provost and Vice Chairman of Tsinghua University’s Academic Degree Evaluation Committee , attended and addressed the meeting while David Li, Dean of Schwarzman College, chaired the meeting.

First, Yan Bin announced Schwarzman College’s Academic Steering Committee’s establishment and issued certificates to the members of the committee. Members of the first Academic Steering Committee include: Yang Bin(Vice President, Provost and Vice Chairman of Tsinghua University’s Academic Degree Evaluation Committee), David Li(Dean of Schwarzman College), Shi Jinghuan(Member of Academic Degree Evaluation Committee), Chen Jian(Chairman of Economics and Management Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee), Li Qiang, (Dean of School of Social Sciences), Luo Gang(Chairman of Humanities Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee), Hu Hongying(Secretary General of Academic Degree Evaluation Committee and Member of Environmental Science and Engineering Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee), Cheng Wenhao(Associate Dean of Schwarzman College) and Jing Yuejin (Chairman of Social Science Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee).

Yang Bin stated that Schwarzman College was founded under governmental support and plays a crucial role in Tsinghua University’s new millennial strategy and is also considered an important practice carried out by Tsinghua University in its comprehensive reform. He hoped that some of the college’s new practices could also be carried out in other departments and schools. On behalf of Tsinghua University, Yang Bin thanked all members for taking on duties entrusted to them and indicated that this academic steering committee was established with members appointed from the university and that all members should continue to let professors govern academic affairs and adhere to academic standards and principles.
David Li read the Notice concerning Authorizing Academic Steering Committee of Schwarzman College to Exercise Part of the Functions of Academic Degree Evaluation Sub-Committees sent out by Tsinghua University’s Degree Office. He noted that the first committee has to take on great responsibilities and that as the establisher of the talent cultivation and teaching system of the college, the committee should actively carry out exploration and innovation in compliance with regulations.

In addition, , members also discussed and reviewed the Academic Steering Committee’s constitution, cultivation plan and new courses, academic dissertation requirements, employment of external professors and other matters during the meeting.
