This month, Schwarzman College invited a number of heavyweight guests to deliver a series of masterly lectures on leadership training, business management, and the relations between China and the world. Moderated by Dean David Li, Executive Dean David Pan, and Associate Dean Jason Cheng, respectively, these lectures, together with the ensuing Q&A sessions, received positive responses from the students.

On October 12th, Esquel Group Chairman & CEO Marjorie Yang became the first guest speaker on “Practice in Global Leadership”, a mandatory course of Schwarzman College. Titled “The Bridge of Education: From Tsinghua to MIT”. Her speech looked back at the indissoluble bound of her family with Tsinghua and MIT over three generations, and looked at the prospects of Tsinghua University’s international development strategy. Concerned with long-term development of China’s higher education, Ms. Yang had offered immense support and help to the internationalization of Tsinghua. She said, “Tsinghua has always been committed to providing an international platform for exchange and learning among talented people around the world. With a particularly ambitious vision, Schwarzman College will become an important cradle of talents for the future world.” Before the course, Ms. Yang toured the college and had an informal discussion with the scholars.

On October 11th, Harvard professor William C. Kirby held an academic lecture titled “China’s Infrastructure, Entrepreneurship, Education and Leadership in the 21st Century”. He gave a positive answer to the question “whether the 21st century will be the century of China”. The professor reviewed the historical vicissitudes of China since modern times, and highlighted the rapid development of China’s infrastructure. Citing the examples of CP Group and Yili Group, he explored the development of Chinese enterprises and the “going global” strategy.

On October 10th, Byron Spurell, President of NBA League Operations, began the “Deloitte Lecture Series in International Business” by delivering a special lecture titled “Lessons in Leadership: From the Playing Fields to the Professional Ranks”. He explained how sports shape leadership based on years of sports management and shared his understanding of leadership formed in management consulting business. In his opinion, good leaders were able to cultivate more talents, who’re excellent leaders rather than blind followers. In light of his experience in the NBA, he humorously described the 3E principle (embrace, embody and energize) in basketball and its impact on leadership.

As an important part of the interactive curriculum of Schwarzman College, the rich and varied lecture courses provided Schwarzman Scholars an opportunity to communicate face-to-face with the world’s political, business, academic, science, and art leaders. The lectures are also open to faculty and students community at Tsinghua University. Both Schwarzman Scholars and the audience agreed that the diversified lectures helped them learn the rich connotation of leadership from various perspectives, continuously broadening their horizons and enhancing overall capability in the future.
