Volkswagen Faculty Chair in Sustainability

About The Organization

Designed to inspire the next generation of global leaders, the Schwarzman Scholars program is the most significant of its kind since the Rhodes Trust was founded in 1902. The program is also the single largest philanthropic effort ever undertaken in China by largely international donors.

The 100-200 scholars chosen annually for this highly selective program will work towards a one-year Master's Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing—one of China's most prestigious universities. As individuals who want to have a positive impact on the world, Schwarzman Scholars will be selected based on their academic credentials, extracurricular interests and leadership potential.

Position Summary

In 2015, Volkswagen (China) Investments Co., Ltd and Tsinghua University entered a partnership naming the “Volkswagen Faculty Chair in Sustainability of the Schwarzman Scholars Program”.

This full-time position will be given to one individual with a one-three years term and competitive pay.

Major Reponsibilities

The Chair shall work full-time at Tsinghua University and shall have no other full-time obligations outside of Tsinghua University.

The Chair shall research and teach primarily in one or more of the following sustainability topics:

1.    Sustainability economics (sustainable business management);
2.    Environmental and resource economics (local sourcing);
3.    Products and sustainability (recycling)
4.    Production and sustainability (supply chain management)
5.    Traffic/mobility and sustainability (mobility concepts, car usage);
6.    Energy supply, sustainability and politics;
7.    Personnel management (value and ethics), innovation management, new business fields and corporate governance.

The Chair shall also assume the following duties:
1. Advising students on capstone projects and thesis writing;
2. Organizing workshops and public lectures for students;
3. Actively participating in academic activities of the Schwarzman College;
4. Assuming all other duties that Tsinghua University specifies for full-time faculty.

Skills, Experience, And Qualifications

The following qualifications and credentials will be considered in appointing the Chair:

1.    Well-known expertise in economics (with a technical or industrial background) or engineering and natural science (with an economics background);
2.    Status as a senior scholar with a strong record of teaching, research and publications at the associate or full professor level;
3.    Significant time spent outside of China, such as studying and working;
4.    Fluency in English (for purposes of teaching, research and communications);
5.    A doctoral degree is required. Educational background in the United States and/or Europe is preferred;
6.    Demonstrated professional familiarity with the automotive industry, such as professional research and publication.
