Upon arrival at Beijing on August 21st -22nd, 110 Schwarzman Scholars from 31 countries came to register at Tsinghua University.

With support from the college staffs, students successfully registered and received their Tsinghua University Graduate Student ID, officially becoming a part of Tsinghua University.

On the afternoon of August 22nd , David Li, Dean of Schwarzman College, welcomed the inaugural class at the college’s International Conference Center together with all the other staff members. Dean Li began with a speech, which proved to be an unforgettable “first lesson” for the Schwarzman Scholars. Dean Li introduced Tsinghua University’s history in a lively manner, explained its motto: “self-discipline and social commitment” and concluded with highlighting the purpose and mission of Schwarzman College. He pointed out that as an integral part of Tsinghua University’s new century strategy, Schwarzman College hopes to make a greater contribution to the development of Tsinghua University, China and the world in the future. This would rely on the hard work and dedication of numerous leaders from Tsinghua University and the whole community, including everyone present here today. He hopes that each scholar would take pride in being part of Tsinghua University, carry forward this century-old university’s commitment to scholarship, bear in mind the college’s mission and be determined to contribute to human civilization and progress as well as world peace and development.

Since launching the Schwarzman Scholars program in April 2013, those involved worked around the clock making preparations in welcoming the inaugural class. Finally, approximately 1,200 days later, Tsinghua University welcomed its first cohort of Schwarzman Scholars. The inaugural class made up of 110 scholars would spend the following year at Tsinghua University, making it for sure an unforgettable experience.

In the picture, we can see every scholar’s face glowing with excitement, indicating how much they’re looking forward to experience life at the college. Each one of them stepped into the college with their dream, confidence and enthusiasm. They all noted how much Tsinghua University surprised them in many ways in just a few days. The campus was larger and more beautiful than they would have imagined. The environment here was also very enjoyable. They are very much looking forward to studying and living at Tsinghua, and hope to meet more Chinese friends. They just can’t wait to become fully integrated into the student population at Tsinghua University.

After more than three years of preparation, the College is well positioned to provide these scholars with the best learning resources. The College would strive to build an international platform for these students with passion, an open mind and keen seen of observation as well as creativity to enable them to communicate with each other in various aspects such as knowledge and culture, helping them become outstanding talents with a broad vision, well-rounded personalities and cross-cultural leadership.
In the next three weeks or so, the 110 scholars will attend a series of orientation courses and outdoor activities. This training program would enable them to become quickly acquainted with each other, be accustomed to their life at the college and learn more about Tsinghua University.
